Lanx Inc. has received a patent for its Aspen MIS Fusion System Technology. The system is used in the treatment of degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spinal trauma or spinal tumors and is currently being used for posterolateral and interbody fusions, according to a company press release.

The device consists of proprietary spiked fixation plates which are rigidly affixed to the spinous process. It also has a central barrel that allows the implant to share weight with the fixation plates while restoring foraminal height and serving as a bone graft containment chamber to promote fusion. The device has an offset shape.

“This is an important addition to our current patent portfolio and we expect additional patents to be granted in the future. We believe the patent granted will support our competitive advantage as we introduce new innovations for spinal fixation and fusion, with a particular focus on less invasive treatment options like the Aspen system,” Dan Gladney, chief executive officer of Lanx, stated in the release.
