Smith & Nephew introduces two new foot and ankle plating systems

Smith & Nephew launched two new plating systems – the VLP FOOT Percutaneous Calcaneus Plating System and the PERI-LOC Ankle Fusion Plating System.
According to a company press release, the VLP FOOT Percutaneous Calcaneus Plating System, which features plates with a streamlined profile and tapered edges, is specifically designed for a percutaneous approach to treat calcaneus fractures. The system provides surgeons with dedicated instruments to assist with plate insertion and fracture reduction and is the only plating system to offer variable-angle locking technology and feature four different screw options to address differences in bone quality.
The PERI-LOC Ankle Fusion System allows surgeons to perform both tibiotalar and tibiotalocalcaneal fusions through multiple approaches with its four anatomic plate designs. According to the release, it is the only system to offer surgeons ankle fusion options for the posterior approach, minimizing soft tissue irritation and preserving the fibula, as well as the traditional anterior and lateral approaches. The screws thread into the plate, creating a true fixed-angle, locked construct and flexibility.
“Foot and ankle surgery is a unique and specialized discipline and it requires products that are equally specialized,” Mark Waugh, vice president for Smith & Nephew’s Global Extremities and Limb Restoration Strategic Business Unit, stated in the release. “Through the ALL28 Portfolio, we are able to provide foot and ankle surgeons a complete line of solutions for treating fractures, deformities, arthritis and soft tissue injuries.”
The systems are available in North America, Europe and Australia.
