European Commission approves Johnson & Johnson acquisition of Synthes

The acquisition of Synthes Inc. by Johnson & Johnson has been approved by the European Commission.

The merged entity, the commission noted in an European Commission news release, will still face competition and not limit the availability of alternatives for customers in the markets concerned.

“This was the first time the Commission examined these product markets,” Joaquin Almunia, European Commission vice president in charge of competition policy, stated in the release. “We obtained remedies to ensure that competition will remain strong in these markets, for the ultimate benefit of patients and social security systems.”
