The Treatment of Paralysis of Thenar Muscles by Tendon Transfer (A Review of Multiple Tendon Transfers Used in the Past 30 Years)
ABSTRACT
A historical review of multiple tendon transfers for thumb thenar muscle paralysis is presented. The review consists of 125 patients (95 men and 30 women) treated by the author from 1957-1999. Patient ages ranged from 20-70 years, and follow-up was 2-25 years. The majority of patients had tendon transfer, namely Bunnel, Royle-Thompson, and Reardon. Pulley modification is described and the end results of each procedure will be discussed. The different pitfalls for the procedures also are evaluated.
