Spine Arthroplasty Society appoints Chun-Kun Park as new president

Chun-Kun Park, MD, PhD, of Seoul, has been named the new president of The Spine Arthroplasty Society (SAS)-The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, the Aurora, Ill.-based medical society recently announced.

“Prof. Park brings such a wealth of knowledge and expertise to SAS … a global perspective,” Kristy Radcliffe, executive director of SAS, said in a press release. “We are honored to have his leadership as our organization continues to grow in size, identity and global scope.”

The society, formed in 1999, also appointed Gunnar B.J. Andersson, MD, PhD, of Chicago, to its board of directors, according to the release. He is the Basic Science & Research Section Editor of Orthopedics Today.

Park succeeds outgoing SAS President Karin Büttner-Janz, MD, PhD, of Berlin, and has served on the organization’s information technology and membership committees.

He is head of the department of neurosurgery and the director of The Spine Center at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, and is chairman of the department of neurosurgery and a professor at The Catholic University of Korea in Seoul.

Park recently researched and published on such areas as balloon kyphoplasty and osteoporotic vertebral fractures, and his clinical interest includes cerebral blood flow and metabolism and minimally invasive spine surgery. He was awarded the 2008 Academic Award by the Korean Neurological Society.

Andersson is the Ronald DeWald, MD, Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the department of orthopedic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he was chairman from 1994 to 2008. He has also served as president of the medical staff, vice dean for surgical sciences and services, and senior vice president of medical affairs at Rush.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Andersson be a part of our board of directors and look forward to taking advantage of his wealth of knowledge and contacts in the industry,” Radcliffe said in the release.

Andersson is the past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine and several other organizations.
