Smith & Nephew Advanced Wound Management has released a new CE Mark-approved product called PICO, according to a company press release. The product is a single-use negative pressure wound therapy system used for acute and chronic wounds, high-risk surgical incisions and skin grafts.

According to the press release, the PICO system reportedly allows fluid management directly through the dressing, eliminating canisters and expanding negative pressure wound therapy to more patients. The product contains a disposable, pocket-sized one-button pump with a dressing that can be worn up to 7 days and is available with minimal administration and training.

“A system like PICO that combines the clinical effectiveness of [negative pressure wound therapy] with the known benefits of advanced wound care dressings is an ideal solution for appropriate patients, especially those at high risk in the critical days following surgery,” Donald Hudson, head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and Groote Schuur Hospital, stated in the release. “PICO opens up some very interesting possibilities in treating many kinds of small to medium-sized wounds in both hospital and outpatient settings.”

PICO is available throughout the European Union.
