KEYSTONE, Colo. — Orthopaedics Today Europe Editorial Board Members Giancarlo Puddu, MD, and Per A.F.H. Renström, MD, PhD, were inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Hall of Fame at the organization’s 2009 annual meeting on Friday.

Puddu has held several teaching appointments at the University of Siena, the University of Chieti and the Istituto Superiore di Educazione Fisica in Rome, and has served as team physician for the Roma soccer team. He has been in private practice since 1987.

“I have been a member of this family for almost 38 years,” Puddu told attendees at the meeting. “Now, I am a full part of the family.”

Puddu served as president of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) in 1999 and has published more than 150 papers and book chapters.

Renström is a founding member of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Academy of Sports Sciences, serves on the IOC’s Medical and Scientific Commission and was a member of the IOC’s Publication Advisory Subcommission.

He is a professor and head of the section of orthopaedic sports medicine at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. Prior to this, he was on staff at the department of orthopaedics at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, and a professor of orthopaedics and sports medicine at the University of Vermont in Burlington.

“The AOSSM is a world-class society in the sports medicine field,” he said at the induction ceremony. “It warms my heart to be part of this Hall of Fame with all of these great leaders.”

Renström has published more than 163 peer reviewed papers, 16 books and 72 full chapters in books and proceedings. His research has also won the AOSSM’s O’Donoghue Research Award, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Kappa Delta Award, the International Society for Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Orthopaedic Sports Medicine’s (ISAKOS) Albert Trillat Award and Sweden’s Outstanding Research in Sports Science Award.

The AOSSM established the Hall of Fame in 2001 to honor members of the orthopaedic sports medicine community who have contributed significantly to the specialty.
