Ortho-tag Inc. and the University of Pittsburgh enter into licensing agreement
Ortho-tag Inc. has entered into a global licensing agreement with the University of Pittsburgh to use transcutaneous near field communication technology in “smart” medical devices for orthopedic implants and recipient patients, according to a press release.
Transcutaneous near field communication enables the transcutaneous transmission of information between the patented Orthotag affixed to an orthopedic implant and a proprietary Ortho-tag Touch Probe/Reader. The Orthotag allows an orthopedic surgeon to identify vital information about a patient’s implant. The technology also includes the Ortho-tag Card, which gives patients the ability to have information related to their implant or surgery with them at all times.
“This technology will bring patient care to an all new level and is not only designed for surgeons, but driven by surgeons,” Ken Laing, Ortho-tag’s chief executive officer, stated in the release.
