LAHAINA, Hawaii — The fourth annual Orthopedics Today course, which moved from New York to Hawaii this year, opened with a traditional pule chant.

The chant, which was performed by Charles Kaupa and accompanied by a conch shell blower, asked for protection and healing and was symbolic of the meeting's new beginning.

Held this year at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa, the goal of Orthopedics Today Hawaii is to bring together exceptional science in a relaxed atmosphere. The meeting schedule allows for ample time for faculty-attendee interaction and for time to enjoy the beautiful island of Maui.

Chief Medical Editor and OT Hawaii Course Director Douglas W. Jackson, MD, in his opening remarks encouraged attendees to not only enjoy the program that he and the exceptional faculty put together, but also enjoy all that the island and location have to offer now.

"Remember that is an important part of 2008 and, as I see it coming, this year is going to be quite a year for all of us," he said.
