Shelf acetabuloplasty can help promote acetabular growth in cases of reducible subluxation, according to the study from Korean researchers.

The authors examined 14 patients who underwent shelf acetabuloplasty for reducible subluxation. At a mean 7 years of follow-up, the patients underwent CT scans. The CT scans were used to measure radiographic indices through acetabular depth and rim dysplasia on 10 radial planes. Plain radiographs were also used in the assessments.

According to the study results, generalized accelerated growth was found in 11 hips, with equivocal growth being found in three. None of the 14 hips were found to display abrupt changes in the geometry of the acetabulum.

The authors noted that though the results are promising, the potential persistence of preexisting zonal rim dysplasia should be considered.

“Despite improved acetabular depth in all hips, eight hips had focal rim dysplasia in the superior zone on CT examinations, and this was associated with a smaller center-edge angle, a greater deformity index, and preexisting acetabular dysplasia,” they wrote.
