OTE200 survey: Patient-specific knee systems

Issue: Issue 6 2011

In the last year, have you used patient-specific systems for total knee replacement surgery?

OTE 200 Survey

Perspective

Arthroplasty of the knee has evolved to now achieve over 90% success rates at 10 years to 15 years. The key to this is an experienced surgeon, able to achieve correct alignment and ligamentous balance, using a range of implant sizes with an adequate thickness of bearing surface. Attempts to close the remaining 5% gap with a perfect “patient-specific” prosthesis is impractical, expensive, with no published evidence to support it and is clearly aimed at the direct-to-patient advertising market.
