Orthopedics Today is a medical newspaper, one of SLACK Incorporated’s 12 medical specialty newspapers within its large publication spectrum.

SLACK also publishes an orthopedics medical newspaper for our colleagues in Europe, Asia and Latin America called Orthopaedics Today International; and two peer review journals in our specialty, Orthopedics and The Journal of Knee Surgery. In addition to these publications and many others, the medical publishing company has developed successful educational courses in other medical specialties such as ophthalmology, pediatrics and psychiatry.

It is our mission to be helpful in keeping you informed about new developments in our specialty. We try to keep pace not only with the scientific issues of interest to our readers but also with new trends in health policies and practice management issues that affect patient care. In addition, we have introduced coverage of orthopedists and their special interests outside their professional duties. These have included fitness activities, artistic accomplishments and contributions in other areas of life. Our special features include scientific round tables and interviews with experts on specific topics that we think will be interesting to clinicians.

The Orthopedics Today staff and I try to present material in a user-friendly way that is accurately reported and timely. We use our samplings of your responses and reading patterns to determine your preferences and will continue to do this in future planning. My part in writing and editing for Orthopedics Today and interacting with many of the readers are activities I really enjoy.

New York meeting

In keeping with this interaction with our readers, I am pleased to announce that we are making one addition this year to the Orthopedics Today schedule. In keeping with some of the other SLACK specialty group successes, we will hold our first Orthopedics Today educational course for our readers. We have chosen New York City as the location for SLACK’s first course for orthopedic surgeons; the date is Nov. 13-14, 2004.

I have designed this course like one I would want to attend as a practicing orthopedic surgeon.

This course will be similar to the format and approach used in this publication. We have chosen New York City as the location because mid-November is a delightful time to visit the city for a stimulating meeting. You may want to attend this meeting as part of a nice pre-holiday getaway with significant others and family members or even alone. The city offers the opportunity to do some holiday shopping, select from among many great restaurants and attend a Broadway play or two while you are in town.

I have designed this course like one I would want to attend as a practicing orthopedic surgeon. The speakers are specifically chosen experts.

I am looking forward to their discussing the differences in their approaches and in their thinking. You will have the opportunity to interact with each other and with the presenters within the educational format we have planned for the meeting. The meeting will be a practical and clinically applicable educational experience. The faculty has committed to the meeting and represent an outstanding group of speakers and thought leaders.

The course description and registration forms for the course will be forthcoming. We hope this addition to our educational format will contribute to your continuing education in orthopedics. I look forward to meeting with you in New York.
