Hike Haleakala volcano crater with Douglas W. Jackson, MD

We have added an event following the Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2008 meeting that is special to me. It is an optional post-meeting excursion on Thursday (the day after our course concludes) to enrich your OT Hawaii 2008 meeting experience. If you have a sense of adventure, I would really enjoy sharing with you one special aspect of the grandeur of Maui. It is one of my favorites hikes.

If you are equipped with sturdy footwear (some have done it with me in running shoes) that does not cause blisters, then you are ready to embark on a 12-mile hike through the Haleakala Volcano Crater. It is a remarkable experience and does not take a high level of conditioning. Those of you considering doing this with me, or who have questions, just e-mail me directly. We usually do the hike in under 6 hours but this time we have allotted 8 hours including breaks.

We plan to take more time for us to enjoy this remarkable place (it is like being on the moon) and we will have time to visit with and get to know each other. I would encourage you to bring and share this with your significant other and family teenagers if interested. We will take pictures and write up our experience in a subsequent issue of Orthopedics Today.

The excursion transportation will depart the Westin at 6 a.m. on Thursday in an air-conditioned vehicle for the round-trip. We will arrive at the Summit around 8:15 a.m. Our starting point will be at 10,023 feet and will begin by taking in the views (if clouds allow) of the crater interior and Big Island. We will have as continental breakfast at the summit, a hearty deli-style lunch in the bottom of the crater and snacks of fruits, cookies, granola bars and the like throughout the day.

The hike will include views of the crater interior, the Big Island, Sliding Sands, Kawilinau (Bottomless Pit), Holula Cabin and spectacular rim views throughout the hike. This hike brings you face to face with the extreme beauty of the Crater.

Enrollment for OT Hawaii is strong and many of you are staying past the end of the meeting to continue your Maui experience and may elect to do this special hike with me. There will be other excursion options and fitness activities in the free time during and after our meeting. More details on these will follow. If you have not yet registered and wish to experience education and adventure on Maui, visit ORTHOSuperSite.com/Hawaii. The meeting will be held January 13-16, 2008, at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Maui, Hawaii.
