Educational opportunity, interaction with thought leaders abound on the Big Island

Issue: December 2009

At Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2010, orthopedic surgeons will provide pragmatic approaches to dealing with common clinical issues and offer participants tips on how to better manage their personal lives and practices.

“This is not a course to take to pass a test, but to be a better clinician,” Course Director, Douglas W. Jackson, MD, told Orthopedics Today. “It will challenge your thinking and cause you to re-assess some of the things that you are doing in your practices. Participants may decide that they want to continue the course they have chosen for their practice, and some may be challenged to consider changes.”

The meeting will be held Jan. 10-13 on Hawaii’s Big Island.

“The attendees can expect an outstanding faculty that is clinically relevant, has first-hand experience and delivers excellent presentations,” Jackson said. “The faculty will be accessible at the Banyan Tree gatherings in the afternoons and during the meeting. I picked speakers I want to hear and learn from and I think you will, too.”

David C. Templeman, MD, will co-chair the trauma program that is newly added to this year’s meeting.

This year the program has been updated and will include more in-depth discussions regarding common fracture and trauma treatments. In addition, the 1-day combined practice management session will place a greater focus on issues relevant to today’s changing practice environment.

“There are more sessions on means of optimizing revenue in this current challenging environment,” faculty member, John D. Kelly IV, MD, told Orthopedics Today. “We have added a piece directed to those seeking new partnerships. We delineate helpful guidelines which will help practitioners choose partners whom they can both trust and work with easily.”

Embracing change

In addition, panel discussions will focus on embracing change as well as the importance of marriage.

“Attendees will learn of the importance of a successful marriage as a means to becoming resilient,” Kelly said. “The role of proactivity and the personal responsibility of a sound marriage will be emphasized.”

Sessions in the sports medicine track will offer didactic lectures on topics such as instability, articular cartilage lesions and when to surgically treat ruptured knee ligaments. The total joint track will include the latest information on hip resurfacing, total hip replacement approaches and soft tissue and total knee replacement procedures, while the trauma sessions will focus on fractures of the elbow, humerus and tibia.
