For our fifth annual meeting on the islands, Orthopedics Today Hawaii returns to Maui in 2012, the site of the first Hawaii meeting.
The meeting is jointly sponsored by Orthopedics Today, the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction and Vindico Medical Education. Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2012 will be held January 15-18, 2012 at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui, Hawaii.
“We have established a tradition of an upbeat clinical educational experience with an outstanding clinically relevant faculty and considerable interactivity with the attendees,” Douglas W. Jackson, MD, course director for the meeting and chief medical editor for Orthopedics Today, said.
Joining the Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2012 program committee — Jack M. Bert, MD; Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD; Christopher S. Ahmad, MD; Richard F. Kyle, MD; and Giles R. Scuderi, MD — will be new faculty members: William R. Beach, MD, Adolph V. Lombardi Jr., MD, FACS, Michael D. Reis, MD, Anthony A. Romeo, MD, Andrew H. Schmidt, MD, Thomas F. Varecka, MD, and David A. Wong, MD, MSc, FRCS(C).
“I am biased in my enthusiasm for the course as I have been involved with others in designing the curriculum and selecting our speakers since we started. This is the kind of course I enjoy attending and the speakers are ones I am interested in hearing and talking to them,” Jackson said.
Additionally, the 2012 program will have more focused case-based presentations in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, total joint, trauma and spine. The faculty will present pro-con debates throughout the meeting.
The Practice Management session on Sunday will feature discussions on the benefits and disadvantages of being a hospital-employed physician and how to survive in private practice. Also, attendees and faculty are invited to meet each afternoon for Banyan Tree Sessions — an opportunity to talk one-on-one with the faculty members to discuss their presentations or get opinions on troublesome cases while earning CME credits.
In addition, Tuesday afternoon will feature a session on Marriage, Stress and Orthopedic Practice. Attendees and their spouses or significant others are encouraged to attend.
“This year’s setting and facilities in Maui are conducive to our quality education format, which has been modified each year in response to our attendees and faculty’s input. We will work hard during the course and there will be time for individual and family activities and relaxation,” Jackson said. – by Kristine Houck, MA, ELS
