Orthopaedics Today announces new top medical editors

THOROFARE, U.S.A. — SLACK Incorporated, publisher of Orthopaedics Today International , recently announced the appointments of four top editors to the publication.

The four new top editors include John C.Y. Leong, FRCS, MCAS, of Kowloon, Hong Kong; René E. Verdonk, MD, PhD, of Gent, Belgium; Per Kjaersgaard-Andersen, MD, of Vejle, Denmark; and Ramon Cugat, MD, of Barcelona, Spain, who accepted their positions in March.

All four editors have been members of the Orthopaedics Today editorial advisory board since the publication’s inception in 1998.

Each of the four editors will serve as chairman of the Orthopaedics Today editorial board for a year on a rotating basis. The four editors will take over for the previous panel of top editors, which included Hans Jürgen Refior, MD, of Munich; Jacques-Yves Nordin, MD, of Paris; Katsuji Shimizu, MD, DSc, of Gifu, Japan; and David L. Hamblen, PhD, FRCS, of Glasgow.

New chairman

Leong will serve as the chairman of the editorial board for 2006. He is the president and head of the department of orthopaedic surgery at The Open University of Hong Kong in Kowloon. He is also chairman of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation and is a past president of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT). He specializes in spine and pediatric cases.

Verdonk chairs the department of orthopaedic surgery at Gent University Hospital in Gent, Belgium, and serves as co-editor of Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, the journal of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA). He is a Belgian national representative for SICOT and is deputy chair of the knee committee for the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS). He specializes in cartilage repair, knee surgery, arthroscopy and sports medicine.

Other additions

Kjaersgaard-Andersen is head of the section for hip and knee replacement in the department of orthopaedics at Vejle Hospital in Vejle, Denmark, and is an associate professor at South Danish Hospital. He is a former president of the Danish Society for Hip and Knee Replacement and is the vice president of the Danish Orthopaedic Society. Specializing in joint replacement, he is a referee for Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica.

Cugat is an orthopaedic surgeon at Clinica Del Pilar in Barcelona and serves as head of the surgical team for the Catalan Football Federation. He is also a member of the education and communications committees with ISAKOS, and he is a frequent host and teacher to visiting orthopaedic surgeons throughout the world. He specializes in arthroscopy, knee surgery, shoulder surgery and sports medicine.

New consulting editor

In addition, Hamblen will serve in the new position of consulting editor for Orthopaedics Today. In his new role, Hamblen will review articles for accuracy and appropriateness prior to publication.

Hamblen is professor emeritus and a former head of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Glasgow, and is a visiting professor to the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. He is a past president of the British Orthopaedic Association, and was made an honorary fellow of the association in 2001.

Hamblen is also a past president of the British Hip Society and chairman of the Association of the Professors of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also served as chairman of the British edition of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery from 1995 to 2002.
