Added trauma sessions and faculty, new location among Hawaii course updates
Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2009 is planned for January 11-14 at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel.
At Orthopedics Today Hawaii 2009, set for January 11-14, an expanded group of orthopedic experts are slated to present on the core educational areas of practice management, joint reconstruction and sports medicine.
The tropical Kohala Coast of Hawaiis Big Island has been selected as the site of the meeting.
The curriculum will include coverage of trauma topics, including fracture management and fixation selection.
We added trauma lectures this year to the sports medicine and joint replacement tracks, based solely on attendee feedback from the 2008 meeting. It has enhanced the program, Course Director Douglas W. Jackson, MD, said.
The Chief Medical Editor of Orthopedics Today, Jackson co-chairs the meetings sports medicine track with William N. Levine, MD.
The 4-day course is divided into three distinct tracks. But as has always been the case with Orthopedics Todays live educational offerings, This is a course designed for practicing orthopedic surgeons, Jackson said. It includes a review of current treatments from the perspective of surgeons actively treating patients and doing clinical research.
Arthroplasty, sports medicine
The joint reconstruction section promises exciting changes, such as presentations on hip and periprosthetic fractures, section chair Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD, said. New faculty members, Richard F. Kyle, MD, and David C. Templeman, MD, will add their expertise to this forum.
Additionally, an in-depth review of early interventions for hip and knee arthritis will be useful for surgeons treating younger patients.
We are also going to expand the portion on bearing surfaces, Schmalzried noted.
According to Levine, We added different topics to the shoulder and elbow sections to complement the successful 08 itinerary, which included managing shoulder instability and repairing cartilage degeneration.
We tried to gear the content to the practicing orthopedic surgeon who manages a variety of shoulder and elbow problems from the basic to more advanced, Levine said.
The sports medicine portion of the program promises to be diverse and will include John P. Fulkerson, MD, presenting the Fulkerson surgical technique.
Practice update
Practice management sessions, moderated by Jack M. Bert, MD, will address legal and professional aspects of hospital relations. We will have an interactive audience response during the coding session, to test attendees on coding orthopedic office visits and arthroscopic procedures, he said.
Also, enhanced sessions on malpractice and stress management geared toward orthopedists in private practice are also planned.
Were going to discuss issues regarding making your office practice more efficient and profitable, he said.
The location of the upcoming meeting moves to The Fairmont Orchid Hotel. Situated in an exotic area of Hawaiis Big Island, it affords attendees and guests opportunities to participate in land and water activities.
