INDIANAPOLIS — Emphasizing the importance of routine eye exams is one way optometrists can combat disparities in cataract surgery outcomes, according to research presented at Academy 2024.

“We know that Black, Asian and Hispanic [patients] are more than 20% less likely to have routine eye exams, and this impacts their visual health, eye health and referrals,” Tawnya Pastuck, OD, director of global value and access at Johnson & Johnson Vision, said in this Healio video. “Understanding the importance of routine exams is so impactful.”

In a literature review, Pastuck and colleagues identified four care points that affect cataract surgery outcomes: routine eye exams, surgical evaluation, surgery and postoperative care.

“Optometry has key points of impact that they can make ... at the eye exams,” Pastuck said.
