VIDEO: Adding HEV-filtering to soft contact lenses may improve vision in blue haze

INDIANAPOLIS — According to research presented at Academy 2024, the addition of high-energy visible, or HEV, filtering to soft contact lenses may improve visual acuity in conditions of atmospheric blue haze.

“We looked at the effects of this additive, which absorbs between about 380 and 440 nm, on visual function,” Billy Hammond, PhD, research professor in the department of psychology at the University of Georgia, said in this Healio video. “That’s just the edge of the visual spectrum, but it turns out that that particular region of the spectrum is pretty impactful for a number of visual parameters.”

According to results of a double-masked randomized trial, participants were able to withstand significantly greater veiling haze while wearing the HEV-filtered lenses compared with controls wearing clear lenses (P < .0001).
