As Healio recently reported, proposed reforms to the NIH, which include folding the National Eye Institute into a multi-specialty grouping, could significantly affect research and have prompted several advocacy organizations to take action.
In this Healio video perspective, Dan Ignaszewski, executive director at the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research, and Diane Bovenkamp, PhD, vice president of scientific affairs at BrightFocus Foundation, discuss what their organizations have been doing to raise awareness and stop this effort.
“Together we’re organizing advocacy days and sending joint statements to Congress, ensuring that our collective voice is heard,” Ignaszewski said.
“BrightFocus strongly believes that maintaining the National Eye Institute as well as the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Neurological Disorders and Stroke as separate entities is vital to ensuring that each field gets the attention, resources and specialized support needed by the innovators in the field,” Bovenkamp added.
