NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Wave-guided optics application technology may now help patients with keratoconus, according to a speaker at Optometry’s Meeting.

“We know a lot of our irregular cornea patients still have residual higher-order aberration despite wearing scleral lenses or corneal [gas permeable contact lenses], so those will be good patients to tackle,” Clark Chang, OD, MSA, MSc, FAAO, FSLS, director of global medical affairs at Glaukos and director of specialty lenses at Wills Eye Hospital, said in this Healio video.

Chang discussed one patient who had failed several scleral lenses and continued to struggle with night glare and haloes. After creating a higher-order aberration lens that took into account the patient’s large pupil size, Clark noted the symptoms improved.

“That’s the kind of patient we can really help,” Chang said. “We want to help our patients beyond their refractive error.”
