NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A preservative-free brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution was statistically noninferior to Bausch + Lomb’s Lumify, offering an alternative option for ocular redness relief, according to a poster at Optometry’s Meeting.

“Commonly included in ophthalmic preparations to protect against bacterial and fungal colonization, the preservative benzalkonium chloride has been linked to symptoms of ocular surface disease, particularly in patients with pre-existing eye irritation,” David G. Evans, OD, from Total Eye Care in Memphis, Tennessee, said in an online presentation.

A preservative-free brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution was statistically noninferior to Bausch + Lomb’s Lumify, offering an alternative option for ocular redness relief, according to a poster at Optometry’s Meeting.

In a randomized, active-controlled study, 380 adult patients with ocular redness from six U.S. study sites were randomized 1:1 to receive preservative-free brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution 0.025% or Lumify (brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution 0.025%, Bausch + Lomb) as a single drop four times daily for 4 weeks.

“Ocular redness values were comparable between preservative-free and Lumify groups at all post-instillation timepoints,” Evans said.

In addition, mean differences in ocular redness score ranged from –0.09 to 0.01 units between groups, demonstrating noninferiority of the preservative-free formulation.

Compliance was high among all participants — 96.8% in the preservative-free group and 97.9% in the Lumify group. Both groups demonstrated efficacy as early as 1 minute after instillation, with results lasting up to 8 hours.

“Preservative-free brimonidine tartrate 0.025% efficacy was statistically noninferior to Lumify for the reduction of ocular redness in adults,” Evans said. “It offers an alternative topical treatment for patients who prefer a preservative-free formulation, without loss of efficacy.”
