FDA approves preservative-free version of Lumify redness-reliever eye drops

The FDA has approved Lumify Preservative Free eye drops for the treatment of ocular redness due to minor eye irritations, according to a press release from manufacturer Bausch + Lomb.
The product is the first and only over-the-counter preservative-free eye drop with low-dose brimonidine tartrate for redness relief, the company stated.
“Lumify Preservative Free significantly reduces redness within 1 minute and lasts up to 8 hours,” John Ferris, MBA, executive vice president for consumer at Bausch + Lomb, said in the release. “We expect to make Lumify Preservative Free available for purchase at major retailers in early 2025 in single-use vials — a convenient on-the-go option for consumers who have sensitivities to preservatives.”
As Healio previously reported, Lumify (brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution 0.025%) redness-reliever drops received FDA approval in December 2017 after clinical trials showed 95% symptom improvement in 1 minute, with effects lasting up to 8 hours. The product is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that reduces redness by selectively constricting venules while maintaining oxygen availability to surrounding tissue.
When used as directed in clinical trials, Lumify Preservative Free drops had a low incidence of side effects, including rebound redness and loss of efficacy over time, according to the release.
