ATLANTA — New molecularly targeted cancer medications can cause ocular surface and retinal toxicities, according to Joseph P. Shovlin, OD, FAAO, at SECO 2024.

“New medications beyond conventional chemotherapies can induce significant ocular surface disease ... and micro-epithelial complexes and can even induce refractive changes,” Shovlin, who practices at Northeastern Eye Institute in Pennsylvania, said in this Healio video.

“Tamoxifen can induce refractive crystals, and some of the monoclonal antibodies can cause vascular occlusive disease and even neurotoxicities where you can have nerve palsies,” he said.

Shovlin noted in his presentation that sometimes treatment must be discontinued to preserve vision.
