This year’s MedPro360, the SECO meeting’s practice management track, is packed with courses designed to help optometrists navigate common challenges, like knowing when to refer and how to effectively lead and communicate with employees.

“I’m really excited about the program and the way it’s evolved over the last few years,” Ted McElroy, OD, chair of the MedPro360 committee, told Healio. “It started out being this keynote event, and we realized attendees really wanted actionable tools they could leave with after attending an hour or five of this program and be able to plug in on Monday morning after the conference.”

Healio is the official media partner of SECO’s MedPro360 program, which helps optometrists navigate the business side of practice. This year’s event, Feb. 28 to March 3, is in Atlanta.

Notable MedPro360 highlights this year include a course on teambuilding and staff retention, led by Frances D. Bynum, OD, owner of Northwest Tennessee Eye Clinic, and Tonya Reynoldson, OD, MBA, senior eye care director at AEG Vision, as well as a course on emotional intelligence and building relationships through communication.

“This course is going to help the communication aspect of trying to understand instead of just trying to be understood,” McElroy said.

Bynum and Reynoldson also will lead a course on collaboration of care, which will focus on recognizing when to make a referral, as well as understanding what providers outside of optometry are looking for in a referral.

“Optometry needs to do a much better job of referring within our profession,” McElroy said. “In addition to that, when we need to refer to those secondary and tertiary care providers outside of optometry, are we making referrals the right way or are we just sending them somewhere else?”

Susan Keene, OD, owner of Envision Eye Care, will lead a program on creating incentives to motivate your team, with a focus on nonfinancial means of boosting employee engagement, while Jackie O’Keefe, ABOC, owner of O’Keefe Optical Consultants, will discuss the importance of patient care.

“Sometimes it’s not just about taking care of the condition but sitting and listening to patients and acknowledging them as an individual,” McElroy said.

In addition, Jay Binkowitz, executive vice president of business strategy and field operations at Total Eye Care Partners, will facilitate a learning lab on the building blocks of business, which include managing teams, addressing priorities of a practice, effectively communicating with patients and exploring alternative opportunities in vision care.

Michael A. Kling, OD, president and CEO of Invision Optometry, and Ali Oromchian, JD, LLM, an attorney at Dental & Medical Counsel law firm, will discuss buying and selling a practice, focusing on the transition and navigating possible obstacles.

Kling also will conduct a leadership course alongside McElroy about the “messy parts” of leadership, which include navigating conflict and embracing disagreement to identify the best ways to move an organization forward.

“Sometimes we spend more time fighting with disruption, and we should try to embrace it, bring it into our practice and make it work for us,” McElroy said.

Heidi Bell, OD, FAAO, FCOVD, owner of Elite Eye Care, will facilitate a small-group learning lab on binocular vision issues, and Katie Davis, OD, FCOVD, owner of The Vision Therapy Institute, will guide a learning lab on neuro-optometry and concussions.
