DigitalOptometrics unveils real-time translation service

DigitalOptometrics has launched DOT, a translation service available in 16 languages and dialects designed to help eye care providers effectively communicate with patients in their preferred language.
According to a company press release, nearly 68 million Americans speak English as a second language or have limited language proficiency. The DigitalOptometrics Translate (DOT) service offers real-time translation that allows technicians, refractionists and doctors to seamlessly interact with patients during eye exams and overcome communication barriers.
“Our real-time translation technology is a game-changer for the optometric industry, enabling eye care professionals to extend their reach and provide exceptional eye care to all patients, regardless of their language,” Howard S. Fried, OD, founder and president of DigitalOptometrics, said in the release.

DigitalOptometrics Translate service, or DOT, hopes to be a game-changer for the optometric industry. It is unclear to me, as an optometrist who works in a hospital-based setting, how this service will successfully compete with existing interpreting services. More than 140 languages can already be interpreted, many with video-remote options. Additionally, there is no mention of the qualifications of those doing the interpreting for this technology.
In health care settings, these services have strict guidelines and should comply with federal regulation. The founder describes the service as a translation, or written language, but seems to mean interpretation, or spoken language, so clarification is needed on what this service will actually provide and how.
Communication in a health care setting is critical; these questions would need to be addressed before DOT can be fully evaluated. Given the information available, there are concerns about the quality of service provided, and it is unclear, in its current state, that it will benefit the existing infrastructure.
