A task force of medical optometry educators is requesting input on the recently released consensus document, Modern Fundamentals of Diabetic Retinopathy Management in Optometry, as part of the second phase of a public health initiative.
The task force, which first met in 2022, is comprised of more than a dozen industry leaders, educators and practice owners from across the U.S., who worked closely with LKC Technologies to develop new guidance for the management of diabetic retinopathy. The group devised the guidelines based on five pillars — detect, grade, assess risk, manage and support — to simplify disease management with a focus on evidence-based care.
Members of the optometric community are now encouraged to complete a digital survey and vote on whether to support specific elements of the new guidelines. The survey also includes an area for write-in comments.
“We believe this is a very important next step in erasing the unmet needs in diabetic eye care,” Amy Hellem, MLA, FAAO, research coordinator, said on behalf of the task force in a press release. “Optometry is at the forefront of this effort, and it is the goal of the task force to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and that a diversity of views are represented and considered as we move forward.”
