The American Optometric Association has announced the launch of Blink Land, its single-player mobile game that aims to teach players about the relationship between eye health and screen time.
According to an AOA press release, more than 227 million Americans play video games, which can be associated with eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision and an increased risk for eye infections due to reduced blink rate. Despite awareness of eye health concerns associated with extended screen time, 54% of gamers do not get yearly eye exams.
“During an annual in-person comprehensive eye exam, a doctor of optometry will not only check your vision but scan for and identify over 270 serious conditions,” AOA President Ronald L. Benner, OD, said in the release. “Annual eye exams coupled with healthy eye habits are a great formula for gamers to optimize their eye and overall health.”
Created as part of the AOA’s Eye Deserve More national public awareness campaign, Blink Land features a character named Blink, who teaches players strategies for eye health while using screens, including the 20-20-20 rule, blinking frequently and setting up screens properly. Players can also book yearly eye exams via a link to the AOA website.
Blink Land was developed by game designer Elaine Gómez-Sanchez and Playcrafting, a member of Screen Time Alliance, which provides eye health tips to gamers via a partnership between AOA and the gaming industry.
“This mobile game is an exciting bridge between the gaming and eye care worlds,” Benner said in the release.
