A uniquely extensive body of literature supports the efficacy of Euclid Emerald orthokeratology lenses in slowing axial elongation in children with myopia, according to a study published in Contact Lens & Anterior Eye.
“The first Euclid orthokeratology lens was approved by the FDA 20 years ago. Given the long history of its use for slowing axial elongation, we saw this milestone year as an excellent time to collate and discuss the evidence of its efficacy,” study author Mark A. Bullimore, MCOptom, PhD, FAAO, adjunct professor at the University of Houston College of Optometry, said in a related press release from Euclid. “While comprehensive data on other lens designs are difficult to obtain, Euclid lenses are among the most widely researched orthokeratology lenses, and this makes for a rich data set.”
In a comprehensive systematic search using Medline, Bullimore and Maria Liu, OD, PhD, associate professor at the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science at University of California, Berkeley, identified 140 articles on axial elongation, 49 of which included data on the Euclid Emerald design — “more than twice of any other manufacturer,” they wrote.
Of 37 final papers, 14 studied axial elongation in children with myopia who were fitted with Euclid overnight ortho-K lenses vs. a control group wearing glasses, a representation of data on 1,351 ortho-K patients aged 7 to 16 years and 1,308 controls. Twenty-three papers without a control group represented data on 2,353 ortho-K patients aged 7 to 17 years.
The 12-month difference in axial elongation between ortho-K wearers and controls was 0.18 mm, with a mean 24-month efficacy of 0.28 mm. The researchers reported similar results for treatment groups in studies with and without controls, with mean axial elongations of 0.20 mm at 12 months for both.
“Euclid ortho-K lenses are used extensively by clinicians for myopia management in children,” Liu said in the release. “This widespread use and the associated body of published literature highlights the critical role that Euclid lenses play in myopia.”
