WASHINTON — Communicating with patients about their symptoms and diagnoses can be considered the psychology of vision loss, or “eyechiatry,” Mohammad Rafieetary, OD, FAAO, said in this Healio video from Optometry’s Meeting.

“Two patients can have the same condition and explain their symptoms to us differently,” Rafieetary, who practices at Charles Retina Institute in Germantown, Tennessee, and Oxford, Mississippi, said.

Optometrists must listen to patients, understand their visual symptoms and explain to them what their symptoms are caused by and what the solutions will be, which “takes a lot of psychology,” he said.
