ATLANTA — Take a big-picture, risk-benefit approach when managing an individual with ocular disease who may be pregnant or who is breastfeeding, Jessica Steen, OD, FAAO, said at SECO 100.

Think about the potential benefits of treatment and understand the safety profile of any medication you may consider prescribing, “but also think about the potential risks of not fully or completely treating that ocular condition as well,” Steen, assistant professor at NOVA Southeastern University College of Optometry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, noted.

Effectively communicate the safety and efficacy data for successful treatment at any stage in a patient’s life, she said.
