In this Healio video, Breanne B. McGhee, OD, FAAO, a featured speaker at the 2023 Island Eyes Conference in Hawaii, discusses key elements from three presentations she gave, as well as highlights from other educational sessions.

In her first lecture, McGhee, a primary care and pediatric optometrist at Ochsner Health in New Orleans and assistant professor and clinical adjunct at Pacific University College of Optometry, spoke with attendees about the importance of diagnostics when investigating ocular and systemic diseases.

“Using blood tests is a great way, if you run into any complex cases, to help with your investigation of various conditions,” she said.

McGhee also covered safety concerns when prescribing therapies to patients who are pregnant or lactating and how to manage their care. “One thing I pushed during that meeting is listening to moms and listening to nursing moms,” she said.

Lastly, McGhee presented case studies of patients who experienced visual hallucinations associated with various conditions such HIV, ocular syphilis and drug toxicity.

“With all three of these cases, it really helped me appreciate the importance of multidisciplinary practice and care,” she said

McGhee emphasized the significance of these and other conference sessions for practicing optometrists and eye care providers.

“Because of the versatility of the lectures and topics, I think all the optometrists were able to take something away so that they can go back to their communities, they can lecture, they can talk to their societies, they can talk to their associations in their respective areas and take those tools and that knowledge back to educate their fellow practitioners, but ultimately properly care for their patients,” she said
