Alcon announced plans to launch its Total30 for Astigmatism, a reusable, water-gradient contact lens, in the U.S. and Europe beginning early 2023.

“Given astigmatic contact lens wearers are more likely to experience dryness and discomfort, we designed Total30 for Astigmatism to bring reusable astigmatic lens wearers total comfort and proven stability for exceptional lens performance,” Ian Bell, president of global business and innovation at Alcon, said in a company press release.

Using water-gradient material, the lenses are designed so the outermost surface is almost completely water, which maximizes the wearer’s comfort by ensuring that moisture is the only thing directly touching the eye, Alcon stated.

In addition to providing on-eye stability for clear vision, the Total30 lens also features biomimetic Celligent technology to deter bacteria and lipid deposits and allow for clean lenses for an entire month.

“While many reusable contact-lens wearers think some discomfort is the norm, reusable toric lens wearers can now experience the excellent comfort of Total30 for Astigmatism,” Danny P. Mathew, OD, a certified glaucoma specialist at Eyeworks in Fort Worth, Texas, and a consultant for Alcon, said in the release.

The Total30 lens is the third lens in the Alcon portfolio for patients with astigmatism, joining the Dailies Total1 and Precision1 disposable lenses.
