Bausch + Lomb announced that the company received 510(k) FDA clearance for its Biotrue Hydration Boost Contact Lens Rehydrating drops.

The preservative-free, multidose drops can be used with soft and gas-permeable contact lenses, the company said in a press release.

Joe Gordon, Bausch + Lomb president of global consumer, vision care and surgical, told Healio that the drops are designed for contact lens wearers experiencing dryness related to their lenses.

“Like all Biotrue over-the-counter products, Biotrue Hydration Boost for Contact Lens Rehydrating drops are inspired by the natural biology of the eyes, formulated with hyaluronan (HA) and match the pH of healthy tears for comfort,” he said. “Bausch + Lomb’s other rewetting drops, Renu contact lens moisture drops and Sensitive Eyes rewetting drops, are for use with only soft contact lenses, and their formulations do not include ingredients such as HA.”

Gordon noted that HA is a moisturizer found naturally in the eye.

The company said in the release that the drops provide contact lenses with up to 8 hours of moisture, according to a laboratory study.

“We look forward to launching Biotrue Hydration Boost Contact Lens Rehydrating drops during the first half of 2023,” Gordon said. “It will be available at most major retailers both online and in-store.”
