Patients consistently rated Biotrue Hydration Plus above 85 on a scale of 0 to 100 when assessing performance, comfort, vision, impression and cleanliness with their current contact lenses, according to a study presented at Academy 2022.
Multipurpose solutions have an important role in successful contact lens wear, Ayda Shahidi, OD, PhD, medical affairs manager of global vision care at Bausch + Lomb, and colleagues said in their study, which assessed Bausch + Lomb’s Biotrue Hydration Plus (BHP) multipurpose solution (MPS).
BHP contains the moisturizer hyaluronan; the antioxidant/osmoprotectant erythritol; surface active agents poloxamine and poloxamer 181; the electrolyte potassium; and a triple disinfectant system of polyaminopropyl biguanide, polyquaternium-1 and alexidine, according to the study.
The 3-month, multicenter, prospective study involved 17 investigators and 127 patients (mean age, 34.4 years; 69% women) who wore hydrogel or silicone hydrogel monthly replacement contact lenses. BHP MPS was used daily.
Investigators evaluated patients at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months and 3 months, Shahidi told Healio. They performed a slit lamp exam at each visit, evaluating patients for corneal infiltrates, bulbar injection, limbal injection and corneal staining.
“Patients rated performance, overall comfort, vision and impression, and lens cleanliness on removal,” she said.
Researchers stated that average overall comfort ratings, on a scale of 0 to 100, were 90.0, 87.0, 89.0 and 89.8 at the four visits, respectively; average overall vision ratings were 94.4, 92.8, 92.5 and 93.8; average lens cleanliness ratings were 89.9, 87.1, 86.8 and 89.2; and average overall impression ratings were 89.3, 86.9, 86.8 and 89.5.
“Over 85% were extremely happy,” Shahidi said, and no patients had any more than mild slit lamp findings.
The researchers concluded that “BHP is very compatible to the eye and a great option for reusable contact lenses,” Shahidi said. “Sometimes changing the solution rather than the contact lens is easier. This can help patients stay in the lens they like.”
