VIDEO: Lighting, filter considerations for low-vision patients

Fact checked byHeather Biele

In this Healio video interview, Jason S. Ng, OD, PhD, FAAO, discusses highlights from his presentation at Academy on lighting and filters in low-vision rehabilitation.

Most patients are not using enough lighting, and it is “really important for their vision function” to increase the amount of illuminance, Ng, associate professor at Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University, said.

Also included in his presentation were data on how patients respond to various color temperatures, how lighting technology itself is improving and the benefits of yellow to red optical filters.

Since there is no systematic way to determine which filter a patient may need, “it’s really still trial and error, depending on the patient’s severity and complaints,” he said.
