VIDEO: Neuro-ophthalmic, retinal diseases can present challenge for eye care providers
In this Healio video, Bisant A. Labib, OD, FAAO, Dipl(CEC), associate professor at Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University, discusses a symposium at Academy 2022 on the management of neuro-retinal diseases.
“Things that can cause retinal disease can often cause neuro-ophthalmic disease, and that overlap is sometimes a little difficult to manage because we don’t know which one is more of a retinal emergency [or] more of a neuro-ophthalmic emergency,” Labib said.
According to Labib, the symposium focused on comprehensive eye care from the perspective of both neuro and retinal specialists. Presenters discussed a variety of patient cases, and Labib noted that a common theme in most cases was the significance of an afferent pupillary defect.
“We really went through all the nuances of both neuro and retinal conditions that bleed together and how to manage them appropriately,” she said.
