A new digital platform, Opti-Xpres, allows for contact-free interaction between patients and doctors to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The HIPAA-compliant app can be used for patient onboarding, outreach and EHR synchronization. It can be customized for each patient to manage eye care appointments and paperwork and try on frames virtually.

Healio Primary Care Optometry News talked with Larry Holle, OD, Opti-Xpres co-founder, about the technology.

Healio: How can Opti-Xpres be implemented into optometry practices?

Holle: Opti-Xpres was developed for the purposes of making optometric practices more efficient and streamlining the patient experience in the office. The app will serve to make the patient contact seamless, paperless and expeditious when they arrive at the office.

For the doctor it will improve accuracy in gathering patient information and autoformatting for electronic medical records. In the COVID environment, offices need to move patients through faster to decrease the chance of spreading infection. We have created a contactless payment portal through which the checkout will be downloaded to the patient’s handheld device, and payment can be taken via the app. If a patient prefers not to try on frames in the office, they can use 3D try-on in a virtual storefront environment.

We created this app to consolidate services that many different vendors offer and bring them to doctors at a price point they could not turn down.

Healio: Please explain the logistics of communicating with patients, screening prior to arrival and remote check-in.

Holle: Especially during COVID, the smoother the check-in process is, the safer and better it is for the patient, staff and doctor.

Patients can schedule their appointments in the real-time calendar, receiving confirmation and push notifications as reminders. Before the appointment, a push notification will request that patients enter their personal and medical information before they get to the office. The app automatically onboards their information, integrating it right into their medical record. This speeds up check-in time, probably saving at least 10 to 15 minutes per patient.

Healio: What are the overall benefits of implementing this technology?

Holle: It shortens the amount of time the patient needs to spend in the office and allows doctors to see more patients in one day. It also improves the patient-doctor experience and allows the doctor to have an online presence with a virtual storefront, all of which are impressive to patients.
