NEPTUNE, N.J. – Patients should not needlessly suffer, but optometrists have tools to help them first determine whether a patient is “doctor shopping,” said Tracy Offerdahl, PharmD, RPh, FAAO, here at a New Jersey Academy of Optometry continuing education event.
Optometrists can access the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, available in nearly 40 states, which provides information on patients taking controlled substances and the doctors who are prescribing them, she said.
Disclosure: Offerdahl reported no relevant financial disclosures.
