Glaucoma impacts patients and care givers significantly, according to a national survey conducted by the Glaucoma Research Foundation and supported by Aerie Pharmaceuticals.

“The results make our shared objectives clear,” Richard Lewis, MD, a practicing glaucoma specialist and chief medical officer at Aerie, said in the release from the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

“As the population ages and more people are diagnosed with this disease, the ongoing search for more effective treatments must be accompanied by enhanced support services to reduce the daily burden of living with glaucoma,” he said.

According to the release, more than 1,600 patients and care givers completed the survey, and the findings show that there are many aspects of glaucoma that affect them such as medication, loss of vision, anxiety, depression and fear caused by having the disease.

Reporting the impact glaucoma has on everyone involved will help bring new treatment options and information to the subject, the foundation stated in the release.
