VIDEO: Surgical guidance system alleviates surgeon stress in the OR
The emergence of refractive cataract surgery is the "most important development" in cataract surgery over the past few years, Carlos Buznego, MD, told colleagues at OSN New York 2016. Ideally, refractive cataract surgery incorporating a surgical planning system to correct astigmatism should decrease surgeon stress in the operating room by guiding axis marking, nomogram application and incision precision and adjustment, according to Buznego.
VIDEO: Intraoperative aberrometry used in routine and atypical cases
At OSN New York 2016, Kathryn M. Hatch, MD, describes how she uses intraoperative aberrometry in the operating room routinely for astigmatism management to titrate limbal relaxing incisions and to adjust IOL power decisions. She also relies on intraoperative aberrometry in atypical cases to help guide decision making.
VIDEO: Prevention 'best cure' for epithelial ingrowth
Prompt handling is key to successful management of epithelial ingrowth after LASIK, according to Helen K. Wu, MD, who spoke on the topic at OSN New York 2016. Management techniques include scaping and replacement of the flap; suturing of the flap, use of tissue adhesive, sealant or amniotic membrane patching to facilitate flap adhesion; and YAG treatment of areas of ingrowth in recalcitrant cases. "Prevention may be, however, the best cure," she said.
VIDEO: Changing IOL material lessens positive dysphotopsia
At OSN New York 2016, Nicole Fram, MD, tells colleagues how to manage positive dysphotopsia, which can manifest on postoperative day 1 after cataract surgery. According to Fram, changing the IOL material to collamer or silicone is a strategy to try in patients with "recalcitrant complaints," although research is needed to confirm the best material for IOL exchange.
VIDEO: Lindstrom reviews ups and downs of the refractive surgery market at OSN New York
In his keynote address at the 25th anniversary of the OSN New York meeting, OCULAR SURGERY NEWS Chief Medical Editor Richard Lindstrom, MD, discusses refractive corneal surgery -- where it is now and where it has been. He advises ophthalmologists to prepare for the higher demand that will come as the millennial generation ages.
VIDEO: Signs, symptoms of dry eye disease improve with use of cryopreserved amniotic membrane
NEW YORK ― At the OSN New York meeting here, Thomas "TJ" John, MD, reports results of a randomized controlled study testing the use of cryopreserved amniotic membrane in cases of dry eye disease. The study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that cryopreserved amniotic membrane, which is rich in nerve growth factors, would promote corneal nerve regeneration and, through its anti-inflammatory properties, would also improve overall ocular surface health.
