VIDEO: Vitreoretinal surgeons benefit from digital 3-D assisted surgery
Digital 3-D imaging is becoming more useful in vitreoretinal surgery, Jorge A. Fortun, MD, said at the OSN New York meeting. As technology continues to improve, Fortun believes that 3-D digital imaging will allow surgeons to move from optical microscopes to digital microscopes and gain better visualization during surgery, opening the door "for potential telesurgery."
VIDEO: More patients, efficient staff key to successful business
Clinicians in the top earning ophthalmology practices in the country see more patients and collect more per patient than those in lower tiered practices, according to Derek Preece, MBA. Speaking at the OSN New York meeting, Preece compared overhead ratios, staff costs and patient services between the top 10% of ophthalmology practices compared with those in the middle 50%.
VIDEO: Low add multifocal IOLs decrease glare, halos
Low add multifocal IOLs decrease untoward effects such as glare and halos compared with predecessor lenses, according to Tal Raviv, MD, who discussed the evolution of the lenses at OSN New York. The low add lenses allow for more functional intermediate vision and improved distance vision, he said, with the trade-off being the possibility of some spectacle dependence for near vision.
VIDEO: Communication key to preventing dissatisfaction after premium lens surgery
NEW YORK -- Addressing dissatisfaction after premium lens surgery begins with preoperative screening and communicating fully with patients, Kendall E. Donaldson, MD, MS, said at the OSN New York meeting. Fully communicating realistic expectations of refractive surgery helps the surgeon select the ideal candidates for surgery, lessening the possibility of an unhappy postsurgery patient. For those who are dissatisfied after surgery, treating residual refractive errors is key, she said.
VIDEO: Blended vision with Sotftec IOL an alternative to multifocal IOLs
For patients who cannot receive multifocal IOLs or for those who have financial limitations, blended vision with mini-mono using the Softec IOL (Lenstec) is an option, Cynthia Matossian, MD, FACS, said at OSN New York 2016. This approach allows patients to have good distance and intermediate vision, with functional near vision.
