CHICAGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the AAO meeting, Valérie Biousse, MD, of Emory Eye Center discusses the impact of a nonmydriatic fundus OCT camera from Topcon Healthcare on ophthalmic screening in the emergency department.

The camera is beneficial for diagnosing conditions such as papilledema because the images are immediately available in EHRs, enabling remote review by ophthalmologists and without requiring pharmacologic pupil dilation.

“The ED providers love it,” Biousse said. “They use it because they do not have to wait for an ophthalmologist to know what to do. The camera and remote interpretation of pictures really decrease the ED length of stay when it shows the ocular pathology or when the pictures are normal.”
