BARCELONA, Spain — In this Healio Video Perspective from the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, Farhad Hafezi, MD, PhD, speaks about cross-linking applied to femto-CAIRS for the treatment of keratoconus.
The soft segments are stiffened by cross-linking and become easier to insert and more compact. In addition, the keratocytes are killed, and the tissue becomes sterile, Hafezi said.
The procedure is performed outside of the body, just before implantation.
“You are not limited to the low energy we have to use in a human eye. We can go very high. We used up to 60 J — that is 12 times the Dresden protocol,” Hafezi said.
Within a week, the segments become softer and integrate within the corneal tissue, he said.
