In this video, Barbara Blodi, MD, discusses long-term data on geographic atrophy growth rates in treatment-naive patients with age-related macular degeneration.

Daniel Muth, MD, of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, presented data at the ASRS annual meeting on growth rates of geographic atrophy (GA) in 75 treatment-naive patients with AMD.

Using semiautomated AI-based processes, the researchers found that bilaterally affected fovea-sparing patients showed faster rates of GA growth, with a 15% risk of developing foveal involvement over time.

“This is very valuable data, that we actually understand what is the natural history of GA,” Blodi said. “The more longitudinal datasets like this, the better.”
