BARCELONA, Spain — The future of glaucoma management will be enabled by AI and genomics, according to a speaker at Glaucoma Day during the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

By using genetic code, it is now possible to predict who may develop glaucoma in the general population, and direct-to-consumers tests such as 23andMe are already available, Anthony Khawaja, MD, PhD, said. Some countries are performing large-scale genotyping of their population as a new form of screening to enable early treatment and prevent late presentation. Additionally, AI can help facilitate comprehensive screening programs.

“But how are we going to implement this? We need to come together. We need to have people who are experts in genetics, people who are experts in AI, people who are patient care experts but then also experts in implementation,” he said.
