VIDEO: ARVO highlights AI’s role in age-related macular degeneration

SEATTLE — In this video, Eleonora M. Lad, MD, PhD, vice chair of ophthalmology clinical research at Duke Health, discusses highlights in age-related macular degeneration from the ARVO meeting.

Highlights included research on oral nutrients, diets, the reduction of treatment burden and the use of AI. AI in clinical trials for retinal diseases, AI for the quantification of fluid segmentation in wet AMD and AI that helps with clinical trial endpoints were hot topics of discussion at the meeting, Lad said.

“The use of artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms, are currently helping us. They play a crucial role in detecting, classifying and predicting the course of the disease,” she said. “This is a huge area of unmet need too because no algorithm has been currently approved by the FDA for management of AMD.”
