FRANKFURT, Germany — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ESCRS winter meeting, Lamis Baydoun, MD, PhD, encourages colleagues to use phakic DMEK and gives pearls for safe, efficient and successful surgery.

Most corneal surgeons prefer to remove the lens before or during Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty surgery because they are afraid of damaging it. However, DMEK has shown over the years to have “fantastic” results also in phakic eyes, and preserving the lens should be a priority in young patients.

“Phakic DMEK is a little bit more difficult but still very feasible,” Baydoun said. “I want to encourage you to go more for phakic DMEK instead of just removing the lens before that.”
