ROME — In this Healio Video Perspective from the FLORetina-ICOOR meeting, Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth, MD, shares her knowledge and firsthand experience with AI-based OCT analysis of geographic atrophy.
AI-based tools allow the retina specialist to identify the biomarkers of disease activity and select the patients who can benefit from the new complement inhibition treatments. They also allow monitoring of treatment efficacy. All this information is contained in the standard OCT images clinicians are using but cannot be identified by the human eye.
“This is very important news for the clinical management of patients with geographic atrophy with invasive therapy that is costly but nevertheless is a great breakthrough in helping patients at risk for vision loss to maintain healthy vision over a lifetime,” Schmidt-Erfurth said.
