When encountering a patient with diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy, I try to individualize the approach for each patient. It’s important that I educate them on the need for frequent follow-up and visits to the retina specialist office because we know that frequent treatment with intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy can lead to improved vision outcomes. Adhering to a treatment protocol that’s personalized to the patient can help reduce the diabetic macular edema and improve their vision and also control their diabetic retinopathy. I try to explain the importance of adherence to my patients and ultimately try to include them into the decision-making process to allow for the best outcome possible.
